UFO Commentary
Patrick A. Huyghe, Newport News, Virginia
History
Patrick A. Huyghe launched UFO Commentary in Spring 1970 as the direct successor to his earlier UFO Analysis & Research Bulletin. The first issue's masthead stated the lineage explicitly: "formerly the UFO Analysis & Research Bulletin." Huyghe published from 72 Jefferys Drive, Newport News, Virginia 23601, the same address as the earlier bulletin. The format shifted from data compilation to analytical essays and debate.
The first volume listed Larry W. Bryant and Joseph M. Erhardt as consultants. Contributors to Vol. 1, No. 1 included Allen H. Greenfield on future directions for UFO research in the 1970s, John A. Rimmer on the UFO as anti-scientific symbol, Michel M. Jaffe on the progress of ufology, Tony Kimery, Dennis Stacy, and Edward M. Bechalo. The publication was quarterly, available through exchange or by subscription at $2.00 per year (rising to $3.00 by Vol. 3).
By the third volume (1972 to 1973), the publication had grown substantially. Huyghe remained publisher but moved to 1419 Riversedge Road, Newport News, Virginia 23606. Allen Benz, M.A. (Twin Falls, Idaho) took over as editor. Associate editors were Lucius Farish and Ted Phillips. Paul Joseph Braczyk handled book reviews. Neil Lynch served as photographic consultant. Gladys Huyghe provided staff artwork.
The Spring 1973 issue introduced three new features: a Public Forum for argumentative essays (inaugurated with a John A. Keel piece on "The Ufological Population"), News in Capsule for quarterly case summaries, and Sighting Analysis and Interpretation for statistical breakdowns of UFO activity by month, location, and country. Sharon K. Lynch and Neil Lynch contributed a technical series on UFO landing site investigation methodology.
