UFO Universe
Timothy Green Beckley, New York
History
UFO Universe was an American UFO magazine edited by Timothy Green Beckley. The first issue appeared in July 1988, published by Condor Books of New York, and the magazine later passed to GCR Publishing. It ran into the late 1990s and carried features by well-known UFO writers alongside the contactee and conspiracy material associated with Beckley's publishing.
Each issue gathered articles, interviews and photographs on sightings, abductions, crashed-saucer claims and government secrecy. The magazine combined the work of established researchers with the more speculative and esoteric material that ran through Beckley's catalogue. The archive records the contents as published and treats the claims reported as accounts attributed to their named authors.
UFO Universe belongs to the documentary record as a newsstand UFO magazine of the late 1980s and the 1990s, a period when the subject moved between serious research and popular publishing. It documents how researchers' work and the contactee and conspiracy strands shared the same pages in that market. The run includes the premiere issue of July 1988 and later numbers; cite the specific issue and date for any article.
UFO Universe carried much of the abduction literature of its period into the newsstand market alongside the work of researchers such as Stanton Friedman, and ran features on the author Whitley Strieber.
