Walt Andrus

Walter H. Andrus Jr. co-founded the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) in 1969 and served as its International Director for over three decades, building it into the largest civilian UFO investigation organisation in the world. Under his leadership, MUFON grew from a small Midwestern group to an international network with field investigators in all 50 US states and dozens of countries.

Andrus was an organisational builder rather than a field researcher. He established MUFON's field investigator training programme, standardised reporting forms, created the annual MUFON International UFO Symposium, and edited the MUFON UFO Journal from its founding. His administrative consistency over three decades gave MUFON an institutional stability that most UFO organisations lacked.

He was also a conservative gatekeeper. Andrus kept MUFON focused on nuts-and-bolts investigation and resisted the organisation's drift toward abduction research and more speculative hypotheses. This conservatism preserved MUFON's credibility with mainstream audiences but also limited its engagement with aspects of the phenomenon that didn't fit the extraterrestrial hardware model.

Andrus stepped down as International Director in 2000, handing the organisation to John Schuessler. He died in 2004.
