Bruce Maccabee

Bruce Maccabee is an optical physicist who spent his career at the US Naval Surface Warfare Center in Dahlgren, Virginia, working on laser weapons and high-energy optics. In parallel, he became one of the most technically rigorous analysts in civilian UFO research, applying his expertise in optics and photographic analysis to UFO imagery.

Maccabee joined the Fund for UFO Research in the 1970s and served as its chairman for many years. He investigated numerous photographic and video cases, including the New Zealand UFO sightings of 1978, where he conducted detailed analysis of film footage taken by a television crew over the Kaikoura coast. His technical papers on the case remain some of the most thorough optical analyses applied to UFO footage.

He also investigated the Gulf Breeze, Florida sightings of 1987 to 1988, supporting the authenticity of photographs taken by Ed Walters. This position proved controversial, as other researchers questioned both the photographs and Walters' credibility. Maccabee maintained his assessment based on his optical analysis.

Maccabee obtained thousands of pages of FBI UFO files through FOIA requests, publishing his analysis in UFOs, Freedom of Information and the Government Cover-Up (2000). His work on the FBI files demonstrated systematic interest in the phenomenon by the bureau extending well beyond the publicly acknowledged period.

His value to the field lies in bringing genuine scientific credentials and methodological rigour to photographic evidence analysis at a time when few working scientists were willing to engage with the subject publicly.
