Flying Saucers Over Papua
Between 1953 and 1959, Anglican missionaries, colonial administrators, traders, and Papuan teachers across the Territory of Papua and New Guinea reported dozens of unidentified aerial objects. Cruttwell, an Oxford-educated priest stationed at Menapi on Goodenough Bay, collected 79 sighting reports and compiled them into this bound analysis. The centrepiece is the Boianai encounter of June 1959, where Father William Booth Gill and 37 other witnesses watched humanoid figures on a hovering craft for three consecutive nights.
On the large object I could see four figures, who appeared to be doing something on the deck. They seemed to be illuminated by a shaft of blue light.Rev. William Booth Gill, Boianai, 26 June 1959
Witness Drawings and Maps
Original sketches drawn by witnesses and compiled by Cruttwell. These include tracings by Father Gill, drawings by Papuan teachers, and position maps of the sighting locations.
The Boianai encounter (June 1959) is one of the most documented cases in the archive. See the Boianai case file for cross-referenced newsletter coverage, related sightings, and witness profiles. Father Gill's testimony also appears in the Australian Government Records via RAAF intelligence files, and in the JIO UFO File where Australian intelligence assessed the reports. The Papua New Guinea sightings page shows all 79 Cruttwell sightings in geographic context.
