About This Collection

Australia maintained a formal UFO reporting and investigation programme through the RAAF from the early 1950s. Sighting reports were filed through Air Force channels, investigated by intelligence officers, and in significant cases forwarded to the Joint Intelligence Organisation for assessment.

The most historically significant document in the collection is the JIO UFO file (A9755, 5), which contains the Turner briefing. This internal intelligence assessment concluded that the United States was conducting covert UFO research while publicly maintaining that UFOs posed no threat and warranted no study. The file was formerly classified SECRET and was released through Australia's archives access process.

The broader RAAF collection (A703 series) contains operational records: sighting report forms, witness statements, investigation notes, and correspondence between Air Force bases and the Department of Air in Canberra. These records document UFO sightings reported across Australia over several decades.
