History

The CUFOS Associate Newsletter was the members' newsletter of the Center for UFO Studies (CUFOS), the research body founded in 1973 by the astronomer J. Allen Hynek. It was published, mostly monthly, between May 1980 and the middle of 1985, to inform the Center's Associates of its activities and its investigations of UFO sightings. It was edited by John P. Timmerman in Lima, Ohio.

CUFOS and its publications
CUFOS was established by Hynek, formerly the scientific consultant to the United States Air Force's Project Blue Book, to pursue the scientific study of UFO reports. The Center issued several publications, which should be recorded as distinct from one another: the International UFO Reporter, its main news and feature magazine from 1976 to 2012; the scholarly Journal of UFO Studies; the occasional CUFOS Bulletin, sent to Associates from 1974 to 1988; and this Associate Newsletter, the mostly-monthly members' bulletin of the early 1980s.

The Associate Newsletter carried news of the Center's work and short accounts of current sighting investigations, written for the Center's supporters rather than for a newsstand audience. The archive records its contents as the Center's own reporting of its activities.

The Associate Newsletter belongs to the documentary record as part of the working papers of one of the principal scientific UFO organisations of its period, and as a record of CUFOS activity in the early 1980s. Cite the specific issue and date for any item.
