History
Official UFO was an American UFO magazine published from 1975 to 1980 by Countrywide Publications of New York, the firm of the newsstand publisher Myron Fass. The first issue appeared in May 1975, and the magazine was issued several times a year, nine times a year by the late 1970s. It paired covers and headlines pitched to the newsstand market with articles by a number of established UFO writers of the day.
Each issue carried sighting reports, case histories, declassified-document pieces, reader features and a recurring contest. The subject matter mixed established case material, such as the Levelland sightings and the Robertson Panel report, with the more speculative fare common to the newsstand market. The archive records the contents as published and distinguishes the magazine's commercial framing from the case material it carried.
Official UFO belongs to the documentary record as an example of the mass-market UFO magazine of the 1970s, the period when the subject reached a wide newsstand audience. It shows how established researchers' work circulated through commercial channels and how that work was packaged for a general readership.
